Low Weng Tchung

Weng Tchung holds a First Class Master of Law degree from the University of Cambridge, with a specialization in Commercial Law. He was the first recipient of the prestigious Tun Suffian Foundation Cambridge Scholarship, and was also elected to a Prize Scholarship by Churchill College, University of Cambridge.

Weng Tchung also obtained a First Class Bachelor of Law degree from Oxford Brookes University, where he graduated top of his class and won the Blake Lapthorn Linnell Prize. He was called to the English Bar by the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, and was a Blackstone Entrance Exhibitioner.

Weng Tchung has a broad and diverse practice, and is regularly instructed in commercial, corporate and telecommunication matters involving novel and complex legal issues. He appears in all levels of the Malaysian superior courts, and has been noted for his “well-researched written submissions”: see Malpac Holdings Berhad v Malpac Capital Sdn Bhd [2017] 1 LNS 1251 at [74] per Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali J (later JCA).

Weng Tchung was invited to contribute to the prestigious Journal of the Malaysian Judiciary, a compendium of legal articles by senior Commonwealth judges and practitioners: see “Mapping Uncharted Waters: Restitution for Indirect Benefits under Section 71 of the Contracts Act 1950” July [2021] JMJ 187.

Weng Tchung is the author of The Law of Restitution and Unjust Enrichment in Malaysia (1st Edition published in 2015, 2nd Edition due to be published in 2025), the first and to date the only dedicated textbook on the law of restitution and unjust enrichment in Malaysia, which is regularly cited in and applied by the superior courts: see e.g. Kosbina Konsult (K) Sdn Bhd (in liquidation) v Madu Jaya Development Sdn Bhd [2019] 3 MLJ 471 at [34] (Court of Appeal) per Tengku Maimun JCA (later CJ).

Weng Tchung is also the co-author of Sinnadurai, Law of Contract, 5th Edition (2023), the authoritative textbook on contract law in Malaysia.
